A great part of the evening was spent ou the question of a breach of privilege, in the N, Z* Times having published the Ward-Hislop correspondence before it was laid on the table of the House. It however resulted in nothing being done. The Representation Bill , was further debated. The Hov e rose at 10.40. Tcekday, July 28. The House met at 2.30. ynfctUXGTON AJfD MANAWATU BAIL WAY COMPANY'S DBAOTAOE ASD FMPOWEKING BILL. Mr Macarthur moved the second rending of this Bill, explaining that its object was to enable the Company to expend their capital in drainage, there being a doubt whether they could do so. The Colonial Secretary and Mr Samuel asked whether the consent of the shareholders hnd been obtained at an extraordinary general meeting. Mr Macarthur said it had not, and the object of the Pill was to do away with the necessity for obtaining such consent, to get which would be verydiffi ult. Be pointed out that the < ompsnv were simply asking for proper power to do what they, were bound by their contract to do ; and said it would be a work of supererogation to ask the shareholders to agree to carrying out their contract. The second reading was agreed to. '" . .',. . . ._ Ministers said, in answer to^pies* tions, the Government had no objection to abolishing the Manawatu Gorge toll at the expiration of the present contract, provided the local bodies would take over the maintenance of tl»e road. The Government would consider the advisableness of giving looal , bodies power to prohibit the sowingor planting of gorse on country road boundaries. , "An Imprest Supply.
