MAHAKIPAWA.

'. ■ The wet season has prevented much work being done for the last month or two. Two or three claims are reported to be doing very wall, especially the Wairarapa claim. A large number of waterwheels and pumping gear have been erected in most of the claims in the main creek. Huts have taken the place of tents, and they are much needed, as the creek is so shut in by high hills that very little sun is seen in the winter time. The road from the Grove to Cullensvflle 'is almost impassable, and taking all into consideration, Mahakipawa ii anything bat a desirable place to reside in at present. There is every prospect of the flat turning out a payable field, but very little can be done until the weather clears up, I fear that the floods will do a lot of damage by bringing down the accumulated failings of several months work and filling up paddocks, shafts, and drives in the creek, and lawsuits will be the order of the day. The 'weather has been unusually bad about the Sounds for the past two months, incessant rain and cold wind. It reminds one of the early days on the West Coast. Very little progress has been made at the Waikakaho, with the'exoeption of the prosSotors, no gold has been yet obtained, alough no end of work has been done, Some shafts have been sank to a depth of SO feet in the the. bed of the creek without bottoming. The country on this side of the 4£nge is very rough and broken, far more so tfian on the Mahakipawa side. Logan and Hill expect to be crushing about Cnristtnaa time. The stone shows very good gold, and I believe the reefs will pay well.
