Manamatu Herald. FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 18G9. COACHING.
In these days of goaheadism coaches have be ome to be looked upon as belonging to the past. Nevertheless they are most useful connecting links, and the statement that a Haw is about to be established betweea t- oxton and the Manawatu railway iine lies been hailed with satisfaction. A good service, quickly and punctually carried out must pay. The question as to the route to be taken we are ready to leave to the promoter to decide. For despatoh and cheapness to the persons travelling, th-re seems no question but that a connection with the railway at or near Levin, would be the most direct, but the unfinished state of the county road, and the threatened erection of toll gate, will prop bly stop any idea of using that route. Undeniably hat would be the best- in the long run, it is the point we have all for so many yeais been making for, and the establishment of a regular carrying trade along it, would do more to accomplish the foimution of a rai way than all the arguments that can be used, as it would be proof positive of a direct road north. The holders of property a ong the line would have been benefited, and sections in Levin and the proposed township of Heatherlea would be worth more with this daily communication with their port, than if left severely alone. The threat of the toll gate is the cause. A firm, opening up a convenience, likes to ince the cost before starting, and the idea that at any time after commencing running, tolls, of an unknown amount, may be demanded from them, will effectually bar that route. The other connection is by Shannon, and the inhabitants of that distriot have ex tended every encouragement to the venture. The road is of equal distamoe and of equal badness, the ferry charges are the same, and no fear of a further toll. -Thepopul**
tion along the road is large and should yield a good passenger trade, whilst goods to the four mills would also help to make a profit. Tho representatives in the public bodies which rule over shannon are obliging, and if asked will at once vote for a toll on the roadtoltereru, they being quite satisfied to yield the revenue if they obtain the coach; As to this town there is but little doubt as we have pointed out, we should have preferred tho Kereru route as ultimately becoming the Levin route, but, wanting communication, we are prepared to accept and assist whichever route the promoter chooses, and leave our friends on the south of the Manawatu to settle their rating difficulties amongst themselves. Whichever secures the route gains a big advantage.
