An engine driver advertises for a situation. He appears to be a well educated man, can help to keep the books, and would also put a little capital into the business. His address will be found in our advertisement. A large contract for clearing drains on the Oroua Downs Estate is advertised in this issue. There are 545 chains to clean, and tenders must be in by the 6th June. Next Wednesday intending tenderers will be Bhown the work, and they must meet at the middle bridge on the main drain at 10 a.m. Messrs Baker & Co insert a notice giving the particulars and pedigree of their lately purchased entire " Lochnagar." Owing to pressure on our space we can only draw attention to the insertion this issue, but will take the opportunity shortly of directing how well he is connected with some of the most famous English winners. The Wellington iron founders should be reaping a rich harvest from the flax trade. The local boats have always cargoes from their foundries. Yesterday amongst bariron, pipes, <&c, were two large screws for presses. The favorite trader s.s. Napier is making hay whilst the sua shines. Lately keen I competition has existed between the s.s. Huia and her, but owing to the mishap to the Stormbird, the Huia has been sent to Wanganui, and so, during her absence, the Napier has^been|flying up and dowu as hard as she can. She was in port again yesterday. Tomorrow and next week is to be signalised by a startling drapery sale at Foxton. Mr Hamilton is determined to let one and all have the advantage of some large reductions, but only for a week. So we recom"inencl our veadej»4o:S9il,np, ep^rly and late, as the sale is undoubtedly a genuine one. In today's issue we insert an inset in which particulars are very fully and plainly set forth. We remind contractors' that tenders for the works advertised by the Wirokino Road Board must be sent to the Chairman by noon of Monday next, addressed t6 the Post Office, Koputuroa. At the station there is a truck loaded with a scutcher for Messrs Hoe and Gatten's mill. The scutcher is the work of messrs Bacon & Speirs. We learn that Mr McMillan is finding all the machinery for this as well |as for Messrs McKenzies' mill at Parewanui. At a meeting of the Directors of the Wellington Meat Export Company, it was decided to make full inquiry, at once, as to the advisableness of erecting freezing and slaughtering works on the West Coast. The enoroachment being made by the Oroua river upon the Palmerston approach to the Awahuri bridge is causing serious apprehension, and it is feared that during the next heavy flood the approach will be completely swept away. At present the river is making rapid and direct inroads to the extent of about half a ohain on the land at this end of the bridge, and if remedial measures be not taken, the Palmerston end of the bridge will sooner or later be in the river. The town will be sad as all music will have left it next week. The auctioneers who have been enlivening their business by songs and tunes, advertise that tonight and tomorrow are their last two days — they go then never to return. We shall all find out how hard it is to say "Goodbye,, but will not object to buy cheap. The Wanganui Herald says: — On the occasion of the removal of Mr George Potter to Foxton the local telagraphists presented him with an address, a set of solitaires and a scarf pin, as a token of their appreciation and well wishs for his future. We notice that the Wellington Manawatu Railway Company are thinking of improving theb property near Moutoa, ' as their solicitor has given notice that it is the Company's intention to pray Parliament for leave to bring in a Bill to authorise the Company to expend such part of its capital in draining the Makererua Swamp and other swamp lands of the Company as may be necessary for that purpose. The South Australian papers mention that the Messrs Burnell, of Hindmmsh, South Australia, have invented a machine which, it ib sta'ed, will reyoiotionine woolacouring. The problem which' the iuveutors c'aim to have solved is us follows: 1. To produce a machine which will cairy a fleece of wool through and scour it perfectly without iv the least tearing or tattling it, aud deliveriog it, dry in the same condition na when put into it, so that, if needs be, it might be sorted after cleansing as well as before. 2. The saving for utilisation of the grease and potash contained in the wool by a simple aud «a»y process. 3' The accomplishment of the before-ineutioned ends by the uae of a solvent which ia not in the least injurious to i the tibre or colour of the wool. It miy be : mentioned that the solvent, which removes ■ the grease while passing through the machine, is evaporated and reoondengerl into the liquid state and used over a«ain continually with but very little waste. The ! grease may be turned into «as to liriv* all ! rbe machinery and pnmp all tno w..fer required. Ab this process is oss-.iially a cold one, no steam or fire is required to heat the scour, consequently tho wo.l <•,„. not possibly be injur. dby the hbtit Tho solvent, which is benzine, is not poisonous and therefore not dangerous to human life.
