THE SALE OF THE WELLINGTON AND MANAWATU RAILWAY COMPANY'S LiNDS. -» . The seventh sale by auction of the valuable lauds of the Wellington aud Manawatu Bailway Company took place in Messrs T. Kennedy Macdonald and Co 's Exchange Hall on Friday la-t, at 2 pm. Long prior to the advertised hour of commencing, the spacioas hall was crowded with those interested in the sale. The midday train from the North brought in a large contingent of buyers, while th« farming districts of Canterbury and the miners of the West Coast of the Middle Island weie to the font with representatives. A soaaewhiit unusual feature of the sale was the presence of a number of the fair sex, who bid vigorously for various secdous. The interest manifested by tbe hundiads of country tilers present was a strong ptoof of the earnest desire to obtain land for personal settlement which has been remarked by the Government for some time. The sale occupied two hours, and the bidding was exceedingly spirited, the competition for the first two sections offered at Ohau beia^r most marked, resulting in their bringing £6 per acre each. The whole of the agricultural sections were sold, and a few of the pastoral sections, the lemainder of the latter being withdrawn for pu.vate sa'e It is not generally known that the Company are compelled under the terras of tbeir coijtvact -wit'i fcbe Government to su'-mit every acre surveyed by them to sale by public avtot'on, aud the Company as a ma ter of form have to offer, as in this sale, large aieas of land only suitable lor extensive pastoral occupation, and which they .never expect to sell at auction, it being f< und often advisable to re-arrange the sectional boundaries and deal privately with buyers. The sale of the township of Ohau \ras Very successful, and formed a marked contrast to the sale of the township of Levin by the Government on Thursday, which only realised some £110. Amongst the rural lands at Utaki we notice that Mr John Kebbell purchased sections Nos 1 and 2 containing 156.0.84 acres for £937 5s 6d. Total of land sold 2995 acres lr Ilp rea ising an average of £2 6a per acre thus amounting to £6879 7s 4d. 16 town sections in Ohau realised an average of £34 5s per acre or £248 2s 6d, and 17 surburban sections, containing 78a lr 22p, realised an average of £8 16* 6d per acre, or £690 5s 10d,and the 2995 alr lip of rural land fetched £6879 7s 4d. The township of Ohau brought £938 8s 4d. Grand total of sale £7847 15 Bd.
