Manawatu County Council
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held at Sansou yesterday, when there were present — Crs McKenzie (chairman), Sauson, Saxon, Hammond and Hansom. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was then read as follows : — From J. McLennan, Oroua Downs, complaining that the tramway contractor had maliciously driven his engine among some cattle which were being taken along the road, and had caused them to break through a fence. He gave notice that a-s the cattle were intended for freezing, lie should hold the council responsible for any damage they might have sustained by bruising. • i From the Mayor of Foxton, stati ing that he had interviewed the agent of the Bank of New Zealand, but was unable to get a decisive | answer re overdraft. I From Cr. McLennan, asking for . leave of ab ence from the meeting. | and requesting that the consideration of his complaint regarding the 1 injury to the cattle might be postponed for a month, if the council , i were not satisfied with his statement. ! Cr Sanson thought that before any definite action was taken Mr 1 Reid's account of the matter should ! be heard, and he therefore moved, and Cr Saxon seconded, "That J. I Reid be asked to give an explanation re the charge brought against 1 him by Cr McLennan." — Carried. Crs Gower and McLennan were granted leave of absence from the meeting. Several applications were received for pern ission to cut the flax on the county road, and it was resolved, on ! the motion of Cr Sanson, seconded
by Cr Saxon, "That tenders be invited for the right to cut flax on all the roads in this county, the same to be in by the 20th inst." Stewart, Sutton, and Co. -wrote asking that a platform should be put down for the convenience of their traffic at Taikorea. Proposed by Gr Sanson, and seconded by Cr Saxon, " That Stewart, Sutton, and Co be allowed twenty of the condemned s copers to construct a coal bunker with at Taikorea." A letter was received from Mr Wallace, general manager of the Wellington Manawatu Railway offering the " Weka " locomotive for £150. The Chairman reported that the Hibernia had been sold for £67 10tf> the cash to be paid before delivery of the engine. Proposed by the Chairman, " That notice be sent to all those who have received permission to cut flax off any road within the county, that such permission is now withdrawn, and that tenders will be called for cutting flax." — Seconded by Cr Hammond and carried. !
