Manawatu County Council.

-_^ • The ordinary monthly meeting of the above council was held at Sanson yesterday. Present — Ore McKenzie (chairman) Saxon, Sanson, McLennan, Ransom and Hammond. The minutes of the last ordinary and special meetings were read and confirmed. The treasurer's report* was briefly as follows :— County fund, debtor £1,900 9s 2d, and estimated that with the amount due from the Foxton Borough Council and other receipts to. conic in by 31st March, the overdraft would conje down to .£l-550, which would be a reduction of £1000 for the financial year. The separate districts' accounts' were as follows, shillings and pence omitted:— Sandon, creditor, £172, Mt. Stewart, £217; Waitohi, £189; Campbell, £183; Carnarvon, £125; Kawakawa,£l2s; Awahou, dehtorv.£7, Mr LiadJs application for a siding received „ favourable: ? ;; consideration. Ors McLetman said that there was another mill to^ b<s. started opposite Mr Lind's, a_g^ the other siding would serve bo^ mills. Ue thought that if they were going to run the tram they should get all the traffic possible. The council concurred in this view, and the Tramway Committee were authorised to deal with the matter. The following resolutions were agreed to. That Harvey 4>e granted an .extension of 14 days to complete his contract on, Hammond's line. That a slaughtering license be granted to Reeve & Co. Foxton, also transfer from E. B, ! Giohard to A. and J. B. Pringle subject to payment of usual fees. That the deputy collectors of dogtax be allowed sixpence per dog on all dogs registered by them up to Ist April. That the Chairman and Or Hammond be authorised to sign and seal the petition of the North Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Proposed by Or Saxon, and seconded by Cr Sanson, " That the neoessary steps be at once taken to recover all money due to the council by the Foxton Borough," Cr Larkworthy moved the resolution of which he had given notice at last meeting, "That this council declines to subscribe more than £12 10s per «tn_aum towards the maintenance, of Scott's ferry, and that notice be given the Ba&gitikei County Counc^. to that effect.'' Cr Larkworthy explained that! tfye reason why he had brought fo_faars this resolution was that the coun^ cillors had declined to pay anything; towards shifting the ferries down in the other part of the district, but had saddled the separate district with the expense. Scott's was of no use to anybody but the, people, who lived in that riding, aiid if they j Wanted to have a ferry theyou£ht to pay for it. " ; '; 3 ; 7 Or M'Lennan, in ftecotfdmq the resolution, said that i^wa^, wasting money to pay £50 per annum to keep ' Scott's Ferry open. If it was worth • anything, it ought to pay a man for working it. A member of the Rangitikei County Council haa said thai £50 a year was too much to pay, and Mr Dalrymple had said that he was not against taking a reduction in the amount paid, but was under 'the impression that the Manawatu Council desired to Bhut up the ferry. The Chairman contended that though £50 might be top, much to pay as a subsidy to the ferry, it was more important to keep it open now than at any previous time, on account of their having a daily mail service. Another consideration he would lay before them, was that Mr Scott haa been, in a- manner, a Government servant for forty-nine years— dating from the time when he brought the mail from WeUington on his back. Mr Scott had built oa the Ferry Reserve on the underitanding that he was to have a permanent interest "ifl. the place. Th-3 whole of the ferry plant belonged to Mr Scott,£and perhaps he would not work it on reduoed terms. He

hoped the Gounod would not reduce thf#amount from £50 to £25, and suggested % reduction should be to no le_» than £40. Or fcarfcf orthy, in r^ply. refused to ad_ppi*&e chairman's suggestion to modify his resolution as to the amount of the contribution, hut he agreed to alter it to allow the ferryman to charge double' fa-treS. An addition was therefore nu^d® to the resolution & follows :— " Tht^ this Council recommends that the" ferryman be allowed . to charge double fare in future," and in that form it was passed. "That Ors Hammond and Sanson be ; a ; committee ' to smtn&d with S. Cokerra his contract, with power tc carry on the work." Tenders were theij. opened: — Frecklington's line-. J.
