THE PARNELL DEFENCE FUND.
*#■ . Our friends the Irish are noted for their wannj heartedness and lib erality so that it is not surprising to find that the residents here have busied themselves in collecting a small sum towards the defence of Mr Parnell in the enquiry that is now being held. Those who do not approve of the action taken by the Irish leader, can find no fault with those, who, not perhaps endorsing j his cause, yet are willing that he should have the means to defend himself with. Some two years ago subscriptions were solicited for some other purpose by the leading Irishmen in this district, and there being a balance lying at the Bank unused, it was determined to devote it for the purpose we have designated, and Messrs Patrick Neylon and Thomas Bowe drew a cheque for the amount (£14 195) which they enclosed to the Eight Eev. Bishop Moran, at Dunedin. Messrs Neylon and Bowe called at our office and desired that we would publish the contributors names, which we do, as under— Subscriptions of £l each— -Messrs P. Neylon. T.
