LONDON A Moonlighter named Tobin de* posed before the Parnell Commission that the Kerry Moonlighters were an organised body, paid and armed by the Laud League. During the trial of Mr W. O'Brien at Carrick County Tipperary, on a charge of using inflammatory language at Ballyneale in September last, the prisoner escaped from the open Court, the crowd covering his flight. A riot ensued, and the fight between tho police aud the populace lasted some hours. The former repeatedly charged tbe mob, using their batons first, and afterward, when they found their efforts repulsed, having recourse to bayonets. Twenty rioters received stabs of a serious nature, and score, of others were more or less inj ured, A dozen police • men were injured, with stones. A somewhat similar scene took place at Clonakilty, County Cork, daring th« trial of a priest. Thirteen policemen were wounded by stones and bottles. In three instances the injuries are dangerous, and iv another fatal. Thirty of the populace were injured. It is reported that the inhabitants of |he Comoro Islands Group, lying between Madagascar and the African mainland, are seeking British protection to avoid French aggression. The date for closing the wool sales has been extended from January 29 to Febiuary 21. Two hundred and fittyfive thousand bale- are available. An unprecedented quantity has gone direct to the weaving districts. This circumatauce is expected to affect the prospects of faulty andinferiormerino. Mr Gladstone has abandoned hia intention of visiting Rome.
