Wednesday, August 24. The sales during the past fortnight have been well attended by buyers and settlers. There is no .noticeable alteration in values. All the stock that offered. were well competed for. ,At Hawera the. yards were not " full, bat the lots were sold pn qc after the auction. At, the St. Hill. S rest Yards afcout the average; numbers, were yarded. Beef was of inferior quality, and the bulk had to go jbo tl\e "grazier. .There was not sufficient forbade requirements. .1 would ' - .^jrge on settlers bringing in only beef of the ■ r " best quality; as inferior will not sell, except / . at store rate* Sheep were in fair supply ; vendor? expect higher prices than buyers are prepared, to. pay, consequently some -pens had to, be turned out unsold. I think J ; that, taking,, into consideration the low ,*<Rrices ruling at Auckland and elsewhere for *beef and mutton, settlers canuot expect to r ' obtain higher rates than those obtainable now. .;The h,orse sale comprised about the usual number, the bidding was brisk, and all that offered found purchasers at the quotations below. ', Land. — I sold Milne's farm near Waiverley, containing 328 acres, at £12 per acre ; also 100 acres to Mr Riddle, near Waverley, ■ ■«■ at £9; and; Mr Andrewa's farm, near Waitotara, at a satisfactory figure. Cattlk— At Hawera, about 200 head were soil— Eat cows, £5; bullocks, £6; ateers, £4 15i ; cows and calves, £4 15* ; heifers. £3 7< 6.1 ; yearlings," £2 ss.
