The World's (New York) special has the following details of the recent census ir, Ireland : — ln some districts in Connaughi and Munster whole villages are almost depopulated, and in all the population is ter ribly thinned out. In West Cork, on the vast estates of the Countess of Kingston, two hamlets have been absolutely deserted. The little village of Knock, County Mayo, where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared, contained 600 souls in 1871. Tonay, exclusive of pilgrims, there are not thirty, all told. Breaches between Extremists and Land Leaguers are widening daily. It is rumored that some of the leading Irish firebrands maintain their peculiar relations with the Castle, and this has led to the revival of discussion as to James Stephen's standing. The New York Fenians vouch for him, but some of his old comrades in the trouble of 1865-67 do not hesitate to charge him with being a Castle spy. The treasury of the Land Leaguers is bankrupt, and strong appeals for funds are made, especially to the Irish in the United States. A despatch has been sent from the British Foreign Office to the American Government, calling attention to operations of Fenians in New York. It is said to be of friendliest character. Atrocious passages in O'Donovan Rossa's paper are cited, and while it is submitted that they go somewhat beyond the widest limits of the freedom of the Press, no demand is made upon the United Stateß as to any particular action. The occurrence has profoundly moved thp nation, and here, as elsewhere, the 4th o f July celebrations will be pas-ed by, despifc c the elaborate preparations that had bp en made. Men of all parties unite in denouncing the atrocious deed, and in tendering their sympathy to tho illustrious victim. The latest news from Washington, d a ted thin day, says:— "Tho result of the ennsultation of physicians i<? that the symptoms are more favorablo than at any time since the shooting. No attempt was made to get at the bullet, as the physicians think it has lodged where it will not necessarily interfere with the ultimate recovery of the Presiden t" The wheat crop of tho United States for 1881 is estimated at -160,000,000 bushels. Trem«ndous storms have ravaged the east and western American States. They were particularly severe in Illinois, Ohio, Missouri, and New Hampshire. Horsee and men are reported to have been killed by lightning ; telegraph wires were everywhere prostrated. The American Consuls throughout Ireland have been instructed to report carefully to Washington concerning tha character and the extent of the disaffection, particularly relative to the prudence and conduct of the Irish- American element. Charles Giteau, t^e man who attempted to assassinate the President, has been morf or less known in Chicago for the pasc ten years. He was a disreputable lawyer, and grearrallv considered half insane. He weni to New York seven orei^ht years ago ; and upon his return, in 1 876, professed to be converted, and delivered several leotaref under the auspice* of the Young Men'f Christian Association.
