POINTING THE MORAL.

' Ti* i c „ . . , ; When the Gbvernmerit firat placed the extra impMt of sijcpenc^ on all telegrams iient t» or rrom non-paying telegraph stations, we ch^w^erised their action as a pross blunder, and tb*<*6q*ebbaßiprave(ithe ootveetness of the remark ; for not only have they been compelled to take the

extra oharge, but they find out (aud probably to their dismay) that the revenue has suffered permanently.. We have hoard of one station in this county, at wliich the average number of messages per week before the extra charge was levied was between 40 and 50. While the sixpenny addition was in force the number of telegrams at the station referred to decreased to about 25 per week, and notwithstanding that the extra impost has now been stepped the number of telegrams received and sent shows no increase. The simple fact appears to be that tho residents of the district 1 in- epi estion have- got out of the habit of using the Avires, and now find I that tlie postal service is an efficient and much cheaper means of communication than the telegraph. The moral conveyed by these f*cts should b^rrembmbered by all heads of departments.
