Telegrams have been received by. the Government from Smyrna to the effect that Midhat Pasha was arrested today, the French and other foreign consuls having refused to afford him an asylum from the Ottoman ministers of justice. St. Petkbsburg* May 19. . General Ignatieff, who was recently appointed Minister of the Interior, has issued a circular with reference to the intentions of his Imperial Majesty the Czar in connec tion with jfche -present internal condition of Russia. The circular states that every effort will be made to extirpate the spirit of rebellion among the people, to strengthen the religious faith and the morals of the peasantry, and lessen their burdens. The aristocracy generally extol the terms of General Ignatieffs circular. . London, May 19. Adelaide and New Zealand breadstuffs are without quotable change. Best Scotch pig iron, No. 1 f.o.b. in Clyde, 475. There is little enqmry for hides. Prices are l-8d lower.
At the wool auction today 10,000 bales were offered. There was good demand generally and full prices were realised. "Withdrawals to date, since the opening of the present series, amount to 4000 bales. Total reserve in notes and bullion in Bank of England is £14,876*500. At the wool sale today, 10,200 bales were offered, making a total of 90,500 catalogued since the opening. The tone of the sale was firm. Melbourne, May 20. The Princes Albert Victor and
George of Wales will probably come on from Albany by the next Peninsula , and Oriental Company's steamer, instead of waiting until the repairs to the Bacchante are finished. Victorian statistics prepared from the census returns, show that the
area of hind devoted to wheat crops
has increased 220,000 acres since the last census. The yield has,however, decreased daring the same period by 265,000 bushels. Adelaide, May 20. Wheat, per bushel, 4s 6d to 4s 7£d. The tone of the wheat market is
steady. Town flour, £10 10s to £10 12a 6d ; country floor* £9 15s to £10. The freight market is dull, very little done during the week. Freight re* mains at last quotations.

Garibaldi, the Italian patriot, has written a letter to the Press with reference to the treaty recently signed by the Bey of Tunis and the commander of the French forces in that country, in wbioh he declares that the annexation of Tunis by France would be an insult to Italy, and that the French policy in that respect is threatening to Italian interests. Sydney, May 21. The Orient Company's steamship Potori, which ran aground at Shark Island, was examined by a diver today, and found to be undamaged. She has, therefore, proceeded on her voyage to London.
