THAT SANDHILL CONTRACT.

TO THE EDITOF OP THE MANAWATU HERALD.

Sir,— l was rather surprised to see in your leader of May 20th an article casting Borne reflections upon myself and father re the tenders for removing sandhill on Avenue Road. My first tender being £109 9s 6d — the rest being above me — Mr Purcell at that meeting objected to my receiving tilt contract, giving!** hit roMon that

the specification was so loosely worded that he (Mr Purcell) could drive a coach and four through it, Now, I ask fhat gentleman if he had examined the specification before the tenders were opened! If not, then has he done his duty v aa a Commission of the Local ' Board? It was clearly his duty to have points ont this discrepancy. It is true, Sir, my father owns one horse and one cart, but I have, not engaged them for more than six months. I •vill now show the inconsistency of Mr Pu rcell. In March last, tenders were called for work to be done, when Mr Rashleigh's tender, being the then lowest, Mr Purcell objected to his tender being received, and wanted to give it to the highest — Mr Guerin ; and for what reason ? Was not Rashleigh as, good a -man as Gueria ;. and was he (Mr Purcell) then looking after the interests of the Board. I think. Sir,' it would be a pity to allow Mr Purcell all his own. way ; it might be the .means of compelling him to retire, »s has been the case before. I am, &c, W. H. Reeve. Foxton, May 23.
