FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD.

The appointment of Messrs J. Linton and Grower as nonnaated members of the Harbour Board in place of Messrs Cook and London is gazetted. The vacancies could not have been filled by better men, as Mr Lmton, in addition to being Mayor of Pa-lmerston and Taonui representative in the County Council, positions which certainly entitle him to a seat on the Hoard, is also admirably fitted for the position. Mr Gower, also, is well known as a public man, having sat for several years for Carnarvon in the County Council, and as a gentleman who is at all times desiious of seeing Foxton progress, both as a town and port, his appointment to the Board will be productive of good. Now that the vacancies on the Board have been filled up, it is to be Imped the meetings will be held at such times as will enable the up-country members— Messrs Macarthur and Linton — io be present. Probably some hour on County Council day would be the most suitable, as such a course would obviate the necessity of the Feilding and Palrner.ston members making a special trip to Foxton to attend the meetings. The operations of tho Hoard will probably become more extended during the next few months. An application has been made to the Government to hand the wharf over to the Board, and if this request is granted the work of the Board will be manifestly increased. Besides this the Board intend shortly to offer a prize of £75 for the best design for deepening the bar and confining the channel At present Mr G- C. Hill, civil engineer, is engaged drawing a detailed map of the river channel, showing the r»iture of the banks, &c, which will be lithographed and will form the data upou which competitors will send in their designs. Speaking generally, the whole district will be largely benefitted by having an improved port, which will mcmi lower charges. It is therefore of the utmost importance that the entire county should be as far as possible represented on the Harbour Board, and that "gco.l men and true " should be selected as the members. Upou Loth these grounds the settlers are to be congratulated ou the nomination of Alessrs J. Linton and Gower.
