THE RAILWAY QUESTION.
-« There is a nice squabble going on nfc present re the West Coast railway. Mv J. H. Wallace- has written to the N. Z. Times saying that his letter to Sir Wm. Fox was a private one - that Sir William had no right to use it publicly— and that he did not say Mr Travel's was not authorised to scate the junction was fixed at Palmerston. The Evening Post thereupon puts the uritter before the public in a leading article and " wants to know, you know " who is right, the Knight or the auctioneer. Mr Travers follows in Saturday's Post, and endeavours to " sit upon" the Editor, who, in a footnote, suggests that the public confidence is being shaken by the discussion. On the whole, Mr Travel's' Palnierston speech has proved the most complete '* boil over " that could possibly have happened. Sir W. Fox will doubtless settle the matter in dispute by quotiug Mr Wallace's words. When Mr Travel's made hi a speecli at Paluierstou we said we believed bi> statement that the junction was fixed at that place was unauthorised. This appears to have been the case, as he says in his letter of Saturday, " It is sufficient for me that the course which I took at Palmerstou has been adopted and approved by the Committee." From this it is evident (I ) That Mr Travers had no authority when he spoke, (2.) That his action has since been approved, not by the Provisional Directors, but by a Committee — who or what the Committee are, we should ika to know.
