HEIFER OR COW.
When does a heifer cease to be a heifer and become entitled to be called a cow ? This question came before the Resident Magistrate's Court at Palmerston Pouth a short time agri, and the Waikouaiti Times says :4--* We weie of opinion certainly that as soon as a heifer bad a calf and became eligible for daiiy purposes then she was entitled to be considered a cow. If we remember right the question was discussed some time ago at a meeting of the Agricultural an-1 Pastoral Association, when members differed in opinion with resj eet to the age when a heifer could be considered a cow ; and we think it was finally decided by a majority that a heifer was entit'ed to rank as a cow as soon as she had a calf, irrespective of age." It is we think usual, however, to speak of a heifer which has turned foni years' old as a cow, whether she has had a calf or not. In some dairying districts in the old country a cow with a first calf is invariably spoken of as a heifer, and although we hold that it saves confusiou in a show yard to adhere to the decision arrived at by the Palmerston AgricnltnmJ and ■ Pasto. al Association, it is certainly allowable to call a cow with a first calf a heifer in ordinary conversation. In South Wales a farmer will say that he has so many cows and so many heifers in niilk. - Hawera Star.
