A Commission, consisting of Mr Shaw, E.M., and Messrs Waring Taylor and Jonas Woodward has been appointed to enquire into the grave charges made by Mr J. H. Shaw, barrister, against Mr Whitelaw, Superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum. The charges made consist briefly" of using brutality and permitting assistant? to do the same, performing himself duties which only the Matron should undertake, and compelling patients whose support is paid for by relatives to do menial and degrading work. The proceedings commenced this afternoon, and will probably last a week at least. The University Senate now sitting here have resolved to press on the Government the o'aims of the University to representation in Parliament. The Australian cricketers ' are now playing Napier. The local 22 are all out for 77. The Australians have 1 wioket down for 86.
