THE RUGBY COLON Y.

A telegram contained in tho San Fiancisco mail news is to the effect " that the Rugby colony in Tennessee is expected to prove very successful." " his colony is an experimental one founded by Mr T. Hughes, the talent* ed- authoi of that charming book, " Tom Brown's School Days." ln that work Mr Hughes has shown himself to be the staunch advocate of out spoken tru h, manliness, and straight forward dealing in social life, lie has also plainly indicated his contempt for some of the shams and frivolities of the age. Judging by a recent speech delivered tiy Mr Hughes on the occasion of putting forward the claims of the colony of New Ru^by, he appears to be establishing it on principles which will enable those who settle in it to lead a pure, simple, and natural life, untrammelled by certain irksome conventionalities, and without having the fear of "Mrs Grundy " before their eyes. The town is to be symmetrically laid out, the sireets wide, and the drainage perfect. The public buildings are to possess some architectural beauty, and the private dwellings are to be built on a harmonious and symmetrical plan. '1 here is to be only one place of worship to be used by all sects alike, and no intoxisating liquors sold within the borders of the new settle- ! ment. The community, apparently, is to provide for its own local selfgovernment, subject, of course, to the Jaws of the State of Tennessee. We shall watch the further development of this experiment in colonisation with great interest. — N.Z. Times.
