THE GOVERNOR AND TE WHITI.

The fact thafc Sir Arthur Gordon has hitherto governed Crown colonies — i.e., colonies not possessed of responsible government — appears to have created a suspicion amongst a number of journalists in the colony that he would play the autocrat. Whether he will or nofc time will show, but he will make a mistake if he does. There has recently been given some colour fco the suspicion by the statement that Captain Knollys, the Governor's A.B. C, had gone 'to Parihaka, for the purpose of delivering a letter to Te Whiti, but the contents of which were unknown. The Evening Post, which acts as a ministerial gazette, gives the following version of the business in Wednesday's issue : — " Afc the request and on the express advice of Ministers, his Excellency consented to despatch liis Aide-dc-Camp to Parihaka with the chief Hone Pihama, the latter conveying a letter from the Governor to Te Whiti, and Mr Hursthouse accompanying them as interpreter. The contents of the letter have not yet transpired, but will be known in a few days, as also the result of the mission. Captain Knollys and Mr Hursthouse are on their way back to Wellington overland. They were delayed at Opunake on their way up to receive some supplementary instructions, wliich it was thought advisable to despatch. Wc:are assured that his Excellency and his responsible advisers arc in perfect accord on this matter, and tlie step was taken entirely at the suggestion of Ministers themselves."
