MEETING TONIGHT.

Our recent article on the proposed new scale qf ferry, tolls at Foxton has naturally caused, .'great cofiiuienti all of a decidedly adverse character. The whole of the sqttlers south of Foxton are against the proposal, and a petition signed hy 44 persous, including ali the influential Europeans, hesides a nuniher of the principal natives, has heen sent to the County ofßce, opposing the tolls, and particularly on the ground that they are to he levied for seven years., A requisition to the Chairman ofthe Local Board to call a meeting for this evening to consider the matter was signed, yesterday hy the principal business people of Foxton. Mr Easton at once consented, and it will accordingly he held at the Athenaeum at eight o'clock toniyht. The whole of the ratepayers should attend, so that an unanimous expression may go to the Council in favour of maintaining the present ferry tolls, which are quite high enough to gain .£3OO per annum to the Council. A pointed letter on this question from the pen of settler well qualified to discuss it appears in our correspondence column, and we commend especially to County Councillors his remarks regarding the diversion of the trade towards the Napiei: -side hy heavy tolls at the Gorge ferrj-. „
