CRICKET.
. _» . FOXTON V. PALMERSTON. This matcli was played at Palmerston on Tuesday last, St. Andrew's Day. It was known before the Foxton men started what the result would be, as four of the best Foxton men could not go, viz., Messrs W. G. Robinson, Ingram, Davidson, and Gannaway. Consequently, it was almost a matter of surprise that the visiting team, comprised mainly of such indifferent players, did so well as the subjoined scores show. Not more than half of the team had ever been in the field together at a time. We certainly think that those players who did go at the last moment to make up a team, so that the Palmerston men should not be disappointed, deserve every credit. Of the matcli itself there is very little to say. The Palinorston cricketers went to the wickets first, and succeeded in putting together 75 runs before they wore disposed of, of which no smaller a number than 28 were extras, principally byes. The Foxton team then went in, but were made very short work of by their opponents, and were all put out for 26 runs, including 3 extras. An acljoumineut was then made for refreshment, after which the Palnierstonians went in for their second innings, and returned for 50, of which 17 were extras. The Foxton players had thus to get 100 in their second innings to win. Salmon and Mason went to the wickets" first, and commenced scoring slowly, when Mason Avas caught out, and shortly afterwards Salmon drove the bail into Swift's hands. The only other players who made anything whatever of a stand were Mace and Howe. At the conclusion of the innings the scores showedßl, the visiting team being beaten by 68 runs. Mr Watson acted as captain of the Palmerstou Eleven, and Mr I. J. Salmon acted in a similar capacity for the Foxton team. The playing throughout of the Palmerston team was very good, the fielding especially being excellent. PALMERSTON. FIUST INNINGS.
