FOXTON KEOATTA, 1881.

+ A meeting of persona interested is getting up the Koxtuu Regatta fur the current sen so a w»is held at Wh>te's hotel on Turfi* day evening. Tlieio was alarge attendance, and Mr Jnc. Yuung wa* voted to the ohair. The first business wan to elect a Sc-cretary, and the choice of the meeting full upon .>>r Shore, who huldthtt office last year, and was unanimously reappointed. The chief bu^inesi transacted was the eleetioo of the committee. The suggestion made by us, and since adopted at both Palme rst on and Feilding 1 , that oach of the three townships should keep to one kind of sports, and appeal to the whole County for assistance, was carried out on Tuesday, in connection witn the Regatta, There was* a general feeling that ah the port of the County, Foxton could fairly look to the whole district for assistance at the Regatta, and a strong committee was therefore formed, comprising gentlemen from each district io the County. The fol lowing wero elected : — Fuxton — Mim^b Stewart, B«rc;es>, Batt, Joi«on, A. Howe, E Cox, J. W. JMi-M, Whyte, M'Lean, W. (J. R.»bin 8 .11, YYo n?, and tt. The Committee will m*ke the ottwr neco99«y appointment*. A long Aitoi»si<m ensue.l a* to what day should lie axe 1 for the Kegatti. Some were in favour of it being held on the usual duy, J intury 23, tho Anniversary of the settlement of the colony, on the ground that being a public holiday there would be a larsrer attendance of the public, and especially from the upper district. Against this it was pointed out that if the regatta were held on AnniverI sary Day, no crew would ke likely to come from Wellington, nor would tho best crews come from Wanganui, whilst the Foxton Club would be unable to compete at the Wellington Regatta, which is held on that day* Those who took this view argued thit if a separate day were selected, and craws from both Wellington and Wanganui competed, the upper district settlers would be only too glad to make a special holiday, in order to enjoy the Regatta. Ifc was also pointed out that by arranging for the Foxtou Regatta to take place either shortly before or after the Wellington ono the boats from other part* of the colony competing at that might be induced, if a couple of substantial prizes were offered, to come on to Foxton, more especially so ii the Wangutiui Itegittta Committee fell in with the same viewx, and were to arrange for their Regatta to take place about the aimo time, so that bouts coming to Wol lington from other parts of the colony wo iH be able to compete at all three Regattas. After a lung discussion, it wns resolved to refer the matter to the distriot committees, and ask them whether the settlers reaMing away from Foxton would be likely to make ho iday if a day were specially appointed for the Itegatta. Upon their replied being received, the day will be definitely fixed, and steps taken t<> prosecute a canvass for subscriptions. The meeting was quite enthusiastic, ttnd a general intention to use every effort to mako the Regatta of 1881 the most successful ever held in Fozton was. expressed. There being no other business, the meeting terminated with a v>to of thanks to the Chairman.
