MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
YESTERDAY. The Council met At 2 p.m. Present— Messrs Macarthur (Chairman), M'Beth, Sanson, Rockstrow, Linton and Gray. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs Kebbell, M'Lennan, and Douglas. FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD. Letter read from the Foxton Harbour Board, enclosing copy of resolution, asking for assistance towards survey of Manawatu river. Mr Sanson strongly supported the request of the Board, and moved, "That the sum of £25 be voted as a contribution towards paying cost of survey. and preparing plans of proposed improvements to the Manawatu Harbour at Foxton, with a view of securing an endowment in land for said harbour." Seconded by Mr Linton, and carried, TRAMWAY. Letter read from Mr Roots, asking permission to lay a tramway across the Makino road to their timber yard. Upon the motion of Mr Linton, seconded by Mr M'Beth, permission was granted, subject to regulations and approval of the Engineer. CORRESPONDENCE. Letter, read from Messrs Richter, Nannestad & Co., complaining of statements made at last meeting that their charges for timber were high, and stating that their prices were the same as those paid by the Rangitikei Council fixed by tender). The letter was received. Letter read from Korte & Co., applying for extension of time upon contract, owing to bad weather. It was resolved to grant a month's extension of time. Lefter read from poundkeepers at Foxton, reporting sales at Foxton pound since they assumed office. Letter read from Mr C. L. Maclean, asking why his costs for preparing a lease to Bull were struck out. Letter read from Provincial District Auditor, asking for a statement of the annual value of rateable property From same, asking certain particulars re the statement of account. Letter read from the Collector of Customs at Wellington, stating that an error had been made in the issue of a license for the Otaki Ferry Hotel, and that he had written to the Chairman of the Licensing Bench, requesting him to take the necessary steps to secure the payment by Mr Udy of £25 short paid by his agent, Mr Krull. Letter read from the Hutt County Council stating that Wi Parata had fixed the 19th instant for a meeting re the inland road. Letter read from Mr Dowling, of Feilding, suggesting certain portions of the Kiwitea road should be metalled. The Council being short of funds could not accede to the request. THE BEACH ROAD. Letter read from Izard and Bell, asking
further information re Beach road upon which their opinion was desired. Proposed by Mr Sanson, seconded by Mr Gray, and carried, "That the further consideration of objections to the beach road be held over until the next meeting of this Council, pending the receipt of solicitor's opinion on the subject." FERRY COMMITTEE REPORT. The Chairman read the following report of the Ferry Committee: — " The Committee on ferry leases met at Feilding on the 18th October, 1880. Members present — Messrs Sanson, Rockstrow, and Macarthur, Mr Linton being unable to attend. A draft of conditions was pre pared, and is now laid on the table of the Council for their approval. ' ' The Committee have to draw the attention of the Council to the fact that under Clause 11 of the amended Counties Act, 1880, the conditions of lease must be advertised in the County for two months, if the extended power of leasing for more than one year is taken advantage of. As the conditions are of some length, it is a matter for arrangement with the County papers, so as to bring the expense of advertising these conditions within the means of the Council, as, if full rates are charged, the Council must revert to the old system of letting for one year." Proposed by Mr Sanson, seconded by Mr Rockstrow, and carried, "That the report of the Ferry Committee be adopted, and that the Committee be requested to make the necessary arrangements with the various newspaper proprietors in the County re insertion of the advertisements." The Committee met the newspaper proprietors, and made satisfactory arrangements with them. TENDERS. Tenders were sent in by the following persons for the supply of dog collars : — Fowles and Ogbourne, Feilding ; T. Wray, Palmerston ; Jordan, Palmerston ; H. Sanson. junr.. Sanson ; H. L. M'Fadyen, Foxton. The tender of H. L. M'Fadyen, being the lowest, was accepted. Tenders for the supply of timber for the Council were sent in by Messrs Richter, Nannestad & Co., Palmerston ; Gillet, Halcombe ; and Bai ey Bros., Taonui. The tender of Messrs Bailey Bros., being the lowest, was accepted, the price being for heart of totara 9s per hundred feet delivered at all stations except Foxton, 9s 9d, and Sanson, 11s, and for heart of matai 7s 6d per hundred feet at all stations except Foxton, 8s 6d, and Sanson, 9s 6d. MISCELLANEOUS. Messrs Linton and Gray were authorised to sign cheques for payments today. DEPUTATION'S TO THE GOVERNMENT. Upon the motion of Mr Sanson, seconded by Mr Gray, it was resolved. " That Messrs Macarthur, Rockstrow, and Linton be appointed a deputation from this Council, to bring the matter of increased railway tariff under the notice of the Government as soon as possible." Proposed by Mr Linton, seconded by Mr Sanson, and carried. " That the Council desires to draw the attention of the Government, to the fact that the late increase of 3d per hundred feet upon all timber conveyed by rail upon the Foxton and Wanganui line, is a most injurious impo-t, and if continued will result in the crippling of our most important local industries." Proposed by Mr Linton, seconded by Mr Rockstrow, and carried, " That the deputation be empowered to bring under the notice of the Government the serious injury that will accrue to the various local bodies through the increasced tariff on all gravel for road-making purposes, and try to get some material reduction on same." JOHNSTOn'S ROAD. Mr Rockstrow called the attention of the Council to the fact that there were large holos in the new road through Johnston's land. Mr Sanson proposed, "That the Councillors of the Awahou riding be a committee to have the Foxton-Otaki road protected by having clay put on same through the sandhills to consult the Eng ineer, and that the cost of same be charged on the Awahou riding." Seconded by Mr M'Beth, and carried. This concluded the business.
