THE BAINESSE CASES.
Considerable interest has been created in the district by the intimation of the charges made by Mr Henry Mace against his late partner, Mr C. Simpson, and the manager of the Oroua Downs station, Mr M'Lennan, of conspiring to defraud him. The summonses arrived in the district ou Tuesday znorniugfftct? Wauganui. Constable Prioe, of FeUding, rode out to Mr Simpson's farm on the Awahuri road early that morning, and served him with the summons shortly after ten o'clook. Mr Simpson at once made his way into town, and took the train to Carnarvon with the view of consulting Mr M'Lennan, the summonses being issued in their joint names. Mr M'Lennan was away from home at the Bulls cattle sale, and on his way to Oroua Downs Mr Simpson met the FoxtOn constable, who had had a fruitless ride to Carnarvon, for the purpose of serving the summons upon Mr M'Lennan. Mr Simpson subsequently saw Mr M'Lennan,' and learned from him that immediately upon hearing of the steps taken by Mr Mace, he had in. structed his solicitors, Messrs Buckley, Stafford, and Fitzherbeft, to raise an action against Mr Mace for malicious proseoution. Acting upon the advice of his solicitor, Mr Hankins, Mr Simpson did not start
for Wellington to attend the Court, as it would have been impossible for bis defenoe to Mr Mace's charge to he prepared in time for yesterday's hearing. Instructions were therefore sent to a solicitor in Wellington to apply for an adjournment. It may bLadded that Mr Simpson does not fft all fear the result of the enquiry, and believes that the evidence he will <g be able to bring will not only procure his acquittal of the serious charge made by his late partner, but will show that throughout the whole winding-up of tiie partnership affairs he endeavoured in every way to accommodate Mr Mace. We near that the Hon. R. Campbell and Mr J. F. Bockstroware among the witnesses subpoenaed by Mr Mace, and that Mr J. N. Flower will be summoned ac a witness by Mr Simpson.
