Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1880. THE PORT OF ENTRY.
The Customs returns for the September quarter are published, and fuliy justify the position we assumed in dlscuse-ing the port of entry question, that it would be most unjust to remove the Customs Officer from Foxton before the port had had a fair trial. The return now before us shows that the ports of Akaroa, Mongonui, Hayelook, Picton, Kaikoura, Russell, and Hokianga, all contributed less to the Customs revenue than Foxton, which treads very closely also on the heels of Tauransra. From the manner in which the trade at Foxton hns progressed during the past few months, it is extremely probab'.e that when the next returns are published the Manawitu port will have crept still further up in the Hat. We hope so. Meantime, it is satisfactory to know there will be the opportunity of trying the experiment.
