FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD.
• The Board met at the Athenaeum yesterday, at 2 p.m. Present — Messrs Gray (Chairman), Thynne, and Russell. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The last meeting of the Board having been held about a year ago, the correspondence was chiefly of a very stale nature. Amongst the letters one was read from the Public Works office, stating that the Government intended to take a portion of the foreshore of the \ Manawatu river for the reclamation works. As the loss cf the foreshore is a serious matter to the Board, it was resolved to consider the letter upon a future occasion, with a view to seeing whether the Board would not have a substantial claim for an endowment Proposed by Mr Thynne, " That the Chairman be requested to ascertain what the cost would be to connect the Pilot Station with the office of the Board at Foxton by an A B C telegraph, and also to enquire whether the owners of the regular traders will contribute any portion towards the cost, and that the Board be called together again upon information being obtained." Mr Thynne pointed out the importance of the port and pilot station being connected by an easy and simple means of communication, and thought arrangements could be made with the Government for the telegraph being hung on their posts, as far as they went. He also thought the Board could fairly ask the Government to allow their linesmen to erect the wire. The cost would not be above £60. The motion was seconded by Mr Russell, and carried. Proposed by Mr Russell, (1 ) That
in view of the acquisition by the Government of a large area of land south of the Manawatu river the Board deems it advisable to repeat its request for a substantial endowment; (2.) That with the view of having data upon which to rest a claim for endowment, the whole of the surplus funds be devoted to securing the j^ services of a competent Engineer, to devise a scheme of river improvement, and furnish plans of same, with re* port added, to the Board; (3.) That considering the importance of the matter to the whole County, the Chairman be requested to write to the following Bodies, informing them of the desire of this Board, also of its ack of funds, and soliciting a grant in aid towards the cost of the proposed survey, via., Manawatu County Council, Palmerston Borough Council, _ Manawatu Highways Board, Foxton Local Board, Feilding Local Board, Manchester Highways' Board, and Otaki Highways Board; (4.) That upon receiving answers from those bodies, the Chairman call the Board together, for tho purpose of arranging for applications being called from persons willing to do the work. Seconded by Mr Thynne, and carried. The balance sheet was passed by the Board. Two of the members nominated by the Governor having ceased to be members under Clause 48 of " The Harbour Act, 1878," Mr Bussell proposed, " That the Board suggest the Foxton Collettor of Customs be appointed by the Governor to one of the vacant seats on the Board." Seconded by Mr Thynne, and carried. The Chairman was requested to con* vey the snggestion to the Government. Mr Bussell was appointed to countersign cheques. The following accounts were passed for payment : — Owners of Osprey, for removing snags, £5 ; Bussell Bros., advertising, £3 10s 6d ; Chairman, for office expenses, £2 ss. This concluded the business, and the meeting adjourned.
