Lifting Stone.— The W&n<j;ini;i Herald | Ba y ß ; — " The Harbour-master has beer engaged for some days in raising a puntload of stove, which was capsized in the river duripgjJatiXQUSltujJiJoT 1 . of the wharf, the contractor yoTwiietfwiis supposed to Ye responsible.** x'Tlie -HarWuv JUoard gave notice to Mr Saunders to lift the stone, but as he took no notice the Boaid is lifting the I obstruction at his expense, and will probably instruct the Board's solicitor to commence proceedings under the Act." The Wrong Man.— The doctors do sometimes bring in outside knowledge in. a diagnosis, says " JEgles." Mr John Furrow, living near Waradga, is a confirmed and cor.stant smoker. Mr William ITurrow being indisposed, sent for Dr Pulse, who carefully examined him, duly sounding his lungs. Putting on a sagacious loot, said tlie doctor, " Ah,' farmer, ybu'vfc heetismok ing far too much." The patient looked astonished, and replied, " Why, doctor, I never- emoked in my: life.".. Taken aback for : the' moment, said ' Dr P., " Oh"/ tMen you're Mr John Furrow?" Having received an assurance upon this point, he reexamined the .invalid, and outdoiDg tbff former aspect of sagacity, he said, "My good sir, your health requires that you should ' Smoke a little, but not too much." Cheap Pavements. — Many resident iv the city have no doubt noticed that a considerable area of footpaths has recently been laid with black flagging in -place of the light grey concrete flags which were formerly used, and the majority have pvobably concluded that they, consist ( of thp.ojd flags, with the addiiioti 'of "a ■ coat W 'for. On visiting the Corporation yards, it is found that these fligs are made there in large numbers, and that the materials used con-.' sist of nothing but fine gravel or coarse sand, mixed with a sufficient quantity of hot tar to " moisten " it. This is put into a mould and compressed by means of a screw, after which it is put aside to sit, which it does within twenty-four hours, while crncrete requiies three months. It has the arlditionul advantage that the cost ib only half that of concrete flagging, while broken pieces may also be made use of by re melting the tar. The invention was 'made by Mr Baird, the City Engineer, who has already demonstrated that it is superior to. all the other kinds of pavement which have been tried in this: c ity._N. Z. Times
