THE LAW REGARDING RECEIPTS
As doubt is frequently expressed as to the precise nature of »he 'receipt required by law to be stamped, \re quote the following clause ":©f " The Stamp Act, 1875," which explains itself: — 94. The term "receipt" means and includes any note, memorandum, or writing whatsoever, whereby any money amounting to two pounds or upwards, or any bill of exchange or promissory note for money amounting to" two pounds or upwards, is acknowledged or expressed to have been received or deposited or paid, or wlrareby any debt or demand, or any part of any debt or demand, of the amount of two pounds or upwards, is acknowledged to have been settled,satisfied, or discharged, o" which signifies or imports any sueh acknowledgment, and whether the same is or is not signed with the name of any porsoa.
