Wellington, Thursday. The Money Market. — During the last month matters, so far as business is concerned, have remained without any mateiial alteration. Tho quietness then reported still prevails, and is likely to do so until shearing operations have commenced, which will bo early next month, when we may reasonably anticipate at: improvement- It is satisfactory to know that trade continues generally sound, nnd that engagements are on the whole very well kept. Capital is now abundant, nnd the ruling rate of interest on large advances well secured does not exceed 8 per cent. Tokens of relaxed pressure on the part of the banks are exhibited in tho reduction of the rates of discount on bills, and interests on deposit*, which re~ main steady since tho change was effected some few weeks back. Coloni m. Produce. — Potatoes — Large quantities from Canterbury continue to be poured into the market, and quittances are difficult to effect at 50s per ton, bags included. A reduction on even this low figure may lie looked for if these heavy shipments last, fc'lour rein 'ins firm at £11 10s. Oats are in light supply, and rates are hardening; good sample* arc worth 2* 3d per bushel IMaize is overstocked, nnd sales are limited ;it &t to 3s fld. Salt butler ia absolutely unsaleable ; Gd to 7d would be accepted if business could be done. Gras.-t Seeds— Some little trade has been done for spring sowing. We quote as follows : — Cocksfoot, prime samples, 4|d ; Canterbury rye grass, good, clean machine dressed, 4s 6d ; clover (in light supply), white Dutch, Is Id to 1b 2d ; red, 10il to lid ; cow grass, lOdtolld; trefoil, 6d to 7d ; Alsyke, Is 4J tn Is 3d ; lucerne, suarce at about I>\ Finest descriptions of Timothy are fetching 6d, aud a risu may be expected, as stocks ore limited. Turnip seeds — Purple and green top, white stone, Devonshire grey, is. The various fescues and other imported English seeds, such as poa pratenses, sweet vernal, foxtail, created dogtail, etc, are Belling at from Is to Is 6d per lb. Messrs Croskery, Habell and 00, report sales during the p/ist week : — Flour, £1 1 to £11 lOd; oatmeal, £11 ; pollard, £5 ; oaten chaff, -to ; potatoes (blue Derwents), 50s ; white kidney early seed, 6s ; wheat, '-ia 9d to 3s ; barley, 3a ; oats, 2s ; maize, 3s Sd ; bran, 8d per bushel ; onions, 63 ; butter, salt, 6d ; fresh, 9d ; eggs, lid ; bacon and hams, 9d to Is ; cheese, 5d to Gd ; fowls, 4s ; ducks, 63 6d ; dairy cowa in good demand ; horses slow of sale ; fat sheep.
