Letter read from A. Gray offering to open a road through his land, if the j, board would undertake to fence same. Mr Purcell asked if the road was of the prescribed size, and if the rod within their power unless it was a ffould-be chain wide. The Chairman thought the Board would not be exceeding their power, and it wculd be a great convenience to the public. The road was not a \ chain wide at one point. Mr Purcell thought the matter should be seen into. Mr Coley said it would be a great boon to Foxton, and as one of the inhabitants thought it should be done. He also believed the rates would be enhanced by the road being opened. A great many people passed over his private land, and as soon as the road was opened he inte|fed to stop them. Tor Jonson thought old roads lying open should be attended to first. He admitted the proposed new road would be a gteat convenience, but . he considered the road from the Avenue bridge to Ingram's corner should be made first. He would object to the proposal. Mr Coley denied that any work was necessary to the road mentioned by Mr Jonson. Mr Coley then proposed — " That the road petitioned for through Mr Gray's property, leading from Mainstreet to the street fron> Avenue bridge towards the Moutoa road parallel to the Main-street be fenced, and that tenders be called for fenoiDg same." The proposition was seconded by | Mr Reeve. Mr Purcell said he objected to the proposal, unless it was- ascertained that the road was a chain wide all through. He agreed the opening of tue road would confer a great boon to the public, and personally I was favorable to it, but it was no use passing a resolution, and then having to rescind it. He would propose as an amendment, "That the question of a road being opened through Mr Gray's property, and taken over by the Board, be left over till next meeting. Seconded by Mr Jonson. & 1 this stage the protest sent by Mr Thynne to the Board some months ago in reference to the same proposal was read, and after some more discussion the members agreed that it would . be advisable to postpone a decision on the matter until next meeting.
