OTAKI HIGHWAYS BOARD.
Saturday, September 4, 1880. The meeting of the Board called for the 21st August having lapsed for want of a quorum, was postponed until the 4th September, when it "was held at the office. Present — Messrs Simcox (Chairman), A. J. Hadfield, J. M'Crae ; and Dr. Hewson. The minutes of the previous meet* ing were read and confirmed. A circular from the BegistrarGeneral to the Board, covering a form to be filled in of the Board's accounts, as also other information relating to this Highway's district for statistical purposes, was read? Dr. Hewson moved that Mr. Hadfield be allowed to read the following resolution : — Moved by Mr. Hadfield, seconded by l>r. Hewson — "That this Board, representing the district of four hundred thousand acres in extent south of Manawatu, proclaimed a desert by a member of the Railway Commission in his place in the House of Representatives,- hereby take the earliest opportunity of protesting against- such an assertion, which is • contrary to fact and unwarranted by any evidence adduced as to the nature of the, country, and utterly opposed to the' testimony of competent and impartial witnesses, who considered <tke • 'district .. r ta be- "pne y : qi . the finest in New Zealand, capable of supporting a dense .population, : bnt , its capabilities liave beeit ignored, and., ' the Government have n.oji,;jp^ted« : t even the cost of a road to the district out of the many mUH<?ni of feOßewtf

money whicti have been unfairly distributei in- -tiie Colony."- Carried vujpittiutousiy. Accounts for the sum of 18s 8d for stationery, &c, were passed for payment. Proposed by Mr M'Crae, seconded by Dr Hewson. That the next meeting of the Board be held at 2 o'clock k p.m. on Saturday the 2nd Octobei. Carried.
