ENGINEER'S REPORT.
a Since last meeting of this Council I have travelled over the whole of the roads in the County and find the metalled roads in a fair state of repair; in some parts the metal is wearing thin ond will require looking to during the summer. I communicated with each of the gangers and roadmen re redu«» tion-flf wageß, and they all have accepted the work at the reduced wages. ; QIIOUA RIDING. The roads in this Biding are in very fine ordor ; some parts will require a few loads of gravel for patching during the summer. There has bsen no works carried oat in this Riding except rdpaira. KAWA KaWA RIDING. Tho roads in this Riding are in a fearful state, in some parts beinx nothing but ponds of water through the sand wearing away in centre of road, I have sent the roadnjen to get water awaj aud also to raise* the ro-vd in these parts. The slopes to sand cuttings have been attended to duriDg the month, and a quantity of furze planted in same. I will as soon as possible have several of the roadmen down in the Foxton roads to do the necessary repairs, and mako, outlets for the water. AWAHOU HIDING. The contractor for (Johnston's road) Foxton-OtaKi Road at Foxton, has finished hi 9 work in a satisfactory manner, and I have had both ends of the road fenced across and theJSroad line sown dowu with grass seed. According to your instructions, tenders were called for Avenue road formation, "he snid tenders wore opened on 3lHh Ausrust, in presence of Councillor Gray, Mr M'Culloch, and myself, wiien that of C. Rosenthnl of I'almerston, was accepted for £4S 10s. I have had the streets through Foxton metalled durinar the month. The contractors nnder the Mauawatu Highways Board on the Motua road have nearly finished their work of formatioa. HOItOWHBNCA BIDING. I have had several repairs done to road lines at Otaki, also the water tables cleared oufe from near Mr Simoox's to creek. Upon my last visit I found Mr. Kiyger had not a train started the survey of n>ad line from Otaki to Waikanae ; I therefore arranged with Mr. C.ukeek to do same, and he is now pushing on the wok. I rode over the ground wiih Mr. Caikeok as near as we could get to the proposed route. I pointed out the direction to take. I would ask if the name of the surveyor on authority from the Native Minister to survey this " Uemura tewe" land noar Otaki, be changed from W Flyger to M. Carkeek. The bush falling on the Otaki Foxton Road ia being pushed on with. The contractors are making a good jr.b of same. BUIDGEB AND FEHRIH9. The ferries are all in good working order. I I have procured a new jenny block and metal sheave for Foxton Ferry, 2 metal sheaves, I for the Gorge Ferry and 1 spare one. There are utill great complaints about the cattle at Foxton. I gave the ferrymen to understand that they were responsible * for the eat;lo not crossing a proper place.
