Tub Inland Road. — Mr Kebbell requests us to give an emphatic denial to the statement recently made in a metrical letter in this, journulj.tP. the effeot that he agreed with the natives to pay them 25s per chain for roadmnking. He states all. arrangements were made by tbe Engineer, Mr Hayns. Thb Inian-d Koad.— ln ; last issue we published a- resolutiou of the County Council to the effeot that all objections in con- ' neotion with, the inland road from Foxton to Otaki will be considered by the < ouncil on "September Sth, at 7 o'clook pm. We preautne objections to the Foxton -Beach Boad will be beard at the same time. . We have been asked to-*' explain that- lhe . mf»tters?to."De : considered are not claims' for : compensation, but simply objections to the road itself. A notice has already appeared in tnia-journal, and ia again published in • thia issue, oalling on persons having objections to the roads mentioned to send in those objections to the County Council within forty , day* o£ -the Iftfr; day of Jnty-— i.e., before the 26ih day of August. The olaims- . for compensation will be heard, not by tbe .County Counoil, but by the Compensation | Court. I

Advbbtisino. — Ajrerj long* aiieussion took 'place* in"Tu*e' Counily Council on Monday evening in commitfee,.*-' on the matter of advertising. The subject* waa introduced by Mr Rockstrow, who expressed himself very strongly on the necessity of retrenchment in this particular matter. His proposal .wasrfo the efFeot that tenders.ahould be invited from the three County newspapers, for • the ; position of County Gazette. A very long discussion took place on the subject,': tbe Ohairm'-in J asserting that it would be very doubtful j retrenchment, and tliat quite .probably, through insufficient publication, the Council would lose more in one month on their contntpta they wouli; gain iv the whole year Mr Linton strongly supported ihe chairman. Eventually- Mr. Rockstrow's. motion was carried by one Vote,' the voting being a 9 follows: — Forthe-raotion — Messrs Rocl'Strow, M'Lennan, Sanson, Gray, and lash. Against — Messis Macarthur, Kebbell, Linton, and M'Beth.. Retrenchment; -r The following., resolutions were passed "in committee " on Monday eveniug, by the County Counoil, withu view to general retrenchment :— 1 . That three months' notice be given to theRate; Colleotor. 2. That three months'notice be given to the Engineer. 3. Thit one newspaper printed in thei County should be appointed ounty Gazette, such position to bo tendered for, and no" advertisements to be inserted iv any other paper except by -lireetion ofthe Council .4. .That wagefor men employed by this Council be "at the rate of os per diem, and gangers at the rate of 7s per '■ diem, wet and dry. 5. That a salary at the rate of £450 per annum be paid to the Engineer (Mr H. Ji Hayns), for two months ending 31st December next; after that time the salary to be £'200 as Engineer, the whole of the slaughterhouse fees, 25 per cent of the dog tax, and a commission of not more tban 3^ per cent on the County rates, ao as to make in all £450 per annum. If the County rates increase so that 3$ per cent mako (sic) together with the other items übovenanied, such commission to bs reduced . in inverse proportion, so that the salary shai not exceed £450 ; the Engineer's whole time to be devoted to Council work. Thb Avenue Road. — Just beforo the County Council meeting broke up on Monday evening, .Mr Rockstrow moved — " That the Engineer be instructed to call for tenders for forming road from Nathan's contract towards Foxton Cemetery ; such work not to exceed £100. Tenders to closo on the 20th August, nnd to be opened by the Euuineer and two Councillors for Awahou Riding." This motion was seconded by Mr Gray, and carried. When this second contract is completed, the Avenue will cer tainly have a muoh better appearand than it had a year ago. The Otaki Christys. — The troupe of amateur minstrels which have recently performed with such success at Olaki, are announced by placard to appear at the Foxton Public Hall thia (Fiiday) evening, at 8 o'clock. As this is iin interchange of compliments between the two townships, we hope the Foxton people will accord as genuine a support to the Otaki Minstrel* as the Otaki settlers gave to the local men. We have heard very good accounts of the abilities of the troupe who perform this evening, and commend the entertainment to the playnoiug publio. ; Escaping from Custody.— Our Otak correspondent wrote as follow*, yesterday : — A native girl dauied Tioriori was arrested yes'eruay, on a charge of petty larceny, and was lodged by Constahle Miichell iv the lock up. Bail was tendered by Hawaii lota and Uikibana, tho father of tlie girl. The amount of the bail was £50, which was accepted by Dr. Hewson, J. P., but the policeman refused to accept bail. Therefore the girl was locked up for the night. This morning she was " missing " from the lockup, although the doors were locked last night. The constable is in a great state of excitement, as bis " bird has flown." Towage,— The Tui did good work yester day in the towing line. After entering the river, she towed out the Schooners Orpheus and Emerald, timber laden, and then towed the sohooner Corner-, 4aden -with wheat foe the Feilding mill, up to the wbarf. Thb Tui.— The owners of the 1 Tui find the Foxton trade increasing so rtoidly that thej intend running her regularly, iv the Foxton to Wellington trade. Lifb Assu'hancr.— -Mr .J. Kennedy Brown, Government Life Assurarce Lecturer nnd. Agent, is at present in' this distridt,'"h'aving arrived per Jane Douglas on Tuesday lasoMr Brown has a higb reputation in the Colony for Success as an Assurance Agent, and we have no doubt those who attend his lectures will find them both interesting and instructive. He wili lecture at the Oroua Downs station tomorrow (Saturday) evening, Mr M'Lennan having placed a building ->t his disposal for the purpose. Railwat Wages.— At a meeting of rail way employes at Christchurch a Tetter of sympathy* was rfead from Messrs Header Wood aod .Stevens,- who pointed out that the reduction, in wages should be discriminative, and in ho " caso lower than the prico paid by private firms. It was reported that the wages' in the Dunedin railway workshops, wero 20 to 30 per dent, higher than those paid for the same work here.
