THE OTAKI ROAD.

to the editor of the manawatu hebai.p. Sir,— Our great County Council body Have let Kebbell with his hobby, To 'secure a load inland, ' Ignore the natives' just demand— The Council, Kubbell, and hie hobby. Queer ! our Couuty Council body Could not have employed somebody Who would have understood what's jusl, And have prevented this distrust In the Council, Kebbell, and his hobby. The County Council have declared That some plans have been prepared ; Timt the prices which have been paid Have secured the bush being laid — The Council, Kebbell, and his hobby. Clever County Councillors all Further say, " The prices paid shall Include the purchase of the land ■'■" ; Showing- that they understand But little of 'Kebbell and his n-.ibby. Happy County Council body— With ii member with a hobby— To obtain iv an underhanded way That for which 'twas eheuper far to pay — The Council, Kebbell, and his hobby. Had the Council offered one pound l«'or an acre, they would not have found " Ways that are dark, tiiclts that aro vain " Now costing thorn two pounds and ten— The Council, Kebbel 1 , and hi* hobby. Thus the road through Horowhenua Will now require " ntu, uui," And for the land they will have to pay, — And this- is all I wan tod to say To tho Council, Kebbell, and iris hobby. I am, &c, Ouseuver. Otaki, 24th July. [We presume our correspondent means that as Mr Kebbell agreed to pay the na tive owners -lo* per chain for work worth only "20s, the extra 5s boing a " sop " for the right of ro;id, the Council has really paid 50s por acre, without getting n title, for land that coul'l have been bought right out for £1 per aero. Still, us we object to have to interpret ietter.-, we shall refuse to publish any more correspondence in rhyme. —Ed. M. Hkkald.]
