IMMIGRATION RETURNS.

♦ From a return laid before Parliament we learn that during the year ended June 80, 1880, 7,418 souls immigrated into the Colony under • the auspices of the Government from Great Britain, the ordinary immigrants numbering 2,844, and the nominated 4,569. The total passage money paid by Government amounted ' to £90,692 8s 9d, against which must be placed £1,124 17s 3d paid in cas# by emigrants before leaving England, £491 16s 9d in notes given by emigrants before leaving England, and £1,889 Is, cash or bills given in the Colony for nominated emigrants. The rates of passage were as follow : — From Plymouth— Adults, £14 7s 6d each ; children, £8 7s 6d each ; from Glasgow— Adults, £18 10s 6d each ; children, £7 10s 6d each. ♦ The total number of immigrants introduced into the Colony by th# Government since the inauguration of the Public Works policy is 100,262, thus destriLuted amongst the several Provincial districts :— Otago, 29,489; Canterbury, 27,712; Wellington,---15,432; Auckland, 12,857 ; Hawke's,- k Bay, 7,804; Taranaki, 2,228; Nel- ■■ son, 2,187 ; Westland, 1,729 ; Marlborough, l|4£o. The following are the nationalities of the immigrants introduced into the Colony to date :— English, 51,108 ; Irish, 24,895 ; Scotch, 16,711 ; Germans, 8,084 ; Danes, 1,968 ; Norwegians, 708; Sweeds, 686; Italians, 312 ; French, 284 ; others, 682.
