MR FREEMAN R. JACKSON'S PORT. NIGHTLY STOCK REPORT.

Wednesday, July 14. I held a large sale at Waverley on Friday consisting of stock bred by Mr H. Axup. The animals were of the best description, and in good condition. The attendance was very large and the bidding exceedingly brink, prices in all cases being in the yen dors' favjr. At th 9 yards today a number of settlers were present, and the bidding was good throughout. The cattle were of average description and met a f»ir market. Sheep were in favor of the sellers, capital prices being obtained for all that were offered. Horses were as usual dull and hardly saleable The bidding for one or two good animals was brisk, but as a rule this description of stock is simply uusaleable. The quotations are: — Cattle.—At Waverley 361 head came forward.—Cowb, pure-bred, £13, £17, £19, up to £30 10s; do, well-bred, £6 Ids; heifers, £10 2s 6d; yearlings, £4 5b ; calves, £1 15s to £3 10s; steirs, 3-year olds, £6 17s 6d. ■ Wellington, Friday. Colonial Produce — "Wheat — Latent telegrams report tlito as worth at Home 495, ex warehouse, and th-tt there ia a probability of a failure of the crop ia Russia this season. The result Of the first Canterbury venture* may now soon be looked for. Prices here are hardening somewhat, in consequence, it is said, of shipments Home having been in some degree out of proportion to the quantity grown. Potatoes - About 100 tons have been imported during the week Some inferior and damaged lots have been quitted by auction at 30s per ton, a disastrous result to the grower, but good sound potatoes may be said to be worth from 45s to 50a per ton. Oats— Shipments have fallen off in consequence of the low prices obtained, and stocks are now light ; good B&mples realise Is led to 2s. Bran and pollard are in full supply, with but little demand ; quotations as previously givei. stand. Chickwheat— The market ia glutted : best quality may bo quoted at 3s, inferior 2». The demand for maize is limited ; New Z -aland is offered at3s6d. Cheese, slow of gale at sjd per Ib. A shipment of ham; and bacon has just been received from Sydney, ami U selling from Hd to 9d per lb Batter— No animation exists; we quote it at 8d to Bid for small paicels of primest qiality ; lower prices have been accepted at auction. Messrs Charles Pownall and Co. report the money market for the last month largely supplied for investment on mortgage, interest ranging from Bto 9 per cent. Great difficulties, notwithstanding, occur in plac ing f undfl.not only from the minimum valuations that axe inbisted upon, but from the large margin likewise demanded upon these valuations. Borrowers naturally hesitate to look up properties of undoubted value for a long period upon terms based upon the present panic value of land Pressure of money fur investment will, no doubt, soon trni to dissipate the present feeling of inBfcuriiy, and we may then look for the completion of I irge transactions new pending. — N.
