COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTION.
... 4 NOMINATION OP CANDIDATES. The nomination of candidates for the seat in the County Council rendered vacant try the bankruptcy of Mr Franci9 Loudon took place yesterday. It was well known that an influential requisition had been prepared, asking Mr Grower to stand for the seat, and though no formal answer had boon given, Mr Gower fully intended to offer himself as a candidate. Ihe only onponeut spoken of was Mr John Purceli, who stated yesterday that he would willingly have resigned in favour of Mr Gower, had that gentleman been nominated. As the hour for nominations to be delivered at Mr Robinson's office approached, it could ;be easily seen something had gone wrong, as the sitting member for Awahou, accompanied by his chief lieutenant, was rather impatiently w .tchinsr for the arrival of Ids candidate. Still, the minutes to I*2 o'clock nteadily decreased, and there was no appear-, anco of Mr Gower. Meantime, the Purcellites kept their " weather eye " open, and seeing Mr Gower's detachment make for the shop of the late Chairman of the Local Board, concluded ~he was to be nomiua ted. This proved to be the case, as short l> after noon Mr Kobinson Announced that the following nominations had been received, viz , Alexander Grr»y, proposed by J. F. Kockitiow, seconded by N. Bcrtlett. John Purceli, proposed l>y J. W. Liddell, ieconded by J. Coley. The reason of Mr Gower not being nomin • «ted is, that any person nominated for & <*eat in tun County Council must signify i>; •writing on the patter, that ho consents to the nominaton. This consent Mr Gi.wer had neglected to give, and not being present to sign the document was out of tho running. The poll will take plaoe on Thursday nexi.
