ENGINEER'S REPORT
Since last meeting of this Board I hay« travelled over the greater portion of tie Highways district, and in most cnse* find the roads in a most fearful state, in fact al--1 tnubt imp&ssable.being • complete quagmire. mo 1 ward. The work of ditch cutting on Frecklington's iine is finished «o far as the contract |ia concerned , but there U sti'd require j j another 25 cli'dnu to be cut ro complete the work to oarrr wtitsr down to a flow iu^ creak, whereas if ir.ft where it is now ntopped, will be the means of flooding the road, by carrying water down new cut ditoh and discharging same on to road line. 1 harotc Attach a letter which I received from Mr Tehau re refund of deposit tor contract foj iaet»lUng Wilson's line.Sandon. Through the amount of wet wather and extra work for Highways Roads cirridd on by the County, I have not been able to tet out th* new road across Mr Wilson'-* property, but will try and havo piaos ready bt»f »re next meetiusr of thin Board. 1 rtceivod a letter ■Mid traoiug jf Mr Roberts' gravel pit at SBnilon from Mr Prior.- Iv (he »aid latter h 1 ' a^ks me to pre: an api ;n of sanv, and certify.'to it. ' This I -will forward to Mr t'rior by Saturduy n-?xt, the said plan bnng nearly flashed; 1 hive oalled tender* for bridges on Foilding-ilalcomberoad no 2 wabd. . The roads in this ward about and leading to Campbelltown are about the worst in the whole highway, district, being in some places nothing put mud up to the horses knees/and in some places of B.mka'- line my horse got completely bogged. I have called tenders ff»r work on this road-line, starting from Jones' Hue. and Working towards CampbeUtown, The contractor for Hiokford's-line formation i* pushing on with his work. 1 had ocoasion to complain about the sizes of the ditches, and instructod him to cut ditches the same size as those higher up the same road. The contractor for bridges and culverts on Hiokford's lino has squared all the timber for said culverts, etc., and I expect by this time he will havo started to build the same. NO 3 WARD. Mr Webb, the contractor for widen ing ditoh at Foxton, has been working [ at the same when opportunity offered, tut this is nece->anri!v a alovt job, through the tide coming up, and al*o the amount |of rain with freshots. llogan is pushing on with his work on the Moutoa road. I huve prepared plans and called tendf.-rs for further works on the Aloutou Road, (the works 1 have started at bouniary of Local Board j and staked out towards Moutoa. j no 4 ward. No work has been done on this road during the month. I visited the road line known as Maxwell's road, and would recommand an expenditure of say £5 to £7 10s, oa two small oreeks. At the present time it is impossible for either Mr Maxwell or Mr ManHon to get a dray to their places. Previously Mr Manson went through the Maori road, but that b*ing now shut up, he has no other way but highway roads thas require the aforesaid culverts to oreeks I. would ask that this small sum may be grunted, us it would be a great boon to the above named gentlemen. no. 5 waud. I have, during the month just closed, visited the road lines at Fitzberbert, both north and south, ami find them in a roost fearful state. The contractors under Coun ty Council for busb>felling are progressing fust with their work. I have had thi- nei:ena;t-y partitions d.'»'js t'» the bridge noar N«w cOiabVs at Fii.zherbHrt north. no. 6 waud. I have had some slight repairs done to the embankment on Ruborts' line no. 7 ward. The bush - felling contracts in the 7,000 aoro bock uod leading to the sftm? in boiug pushed on with. I devoted several days to the Kiwitea district, and staked out 180 chains, also levelled same. The work will be rather heavy, nn\ in some cis s the gr- des will be rather steep. Th « above 1 30 chains, if lot by the Cou: ty Corn-oil, will form the road to within «<mv 10 to 12 chains of the Kiwi^a stream. I inHtruotod one <»f my roj'dmon to ,n«ake a crossing at the Kiw.tßu strnitm on the boundary ros'.d. also to clear away the accumulation of debris above the crossing.
