9^^ The Waipawa Mail thus refers to the Manawatu Gorge Ferry :— "Much dissatisfaction is constantly expressed by travellers in the Woodville and Manawatu districts at the condition of the ferry on the Manawatu river. Much of the inconvenience complainechof arises from the frequent changes of\the ferrymen. The ferry ib annually- let by the County Council, "^atfflT usually by the time the ferryman becomes expert at his work, the ferry is let to another man, a circumstance whicH, resulting in the employment of another * greenhorn,' causes danger and inconvenience" t.o~ tire- public-. The Council should either let the ferry for a period of three years, or treat it as a toll bar, by employing a responsible person. At all events, it is tho Council's duty to ses that competent hands only are employed to work the p\int."
