Monday, Jvn*e 5. Continued from last issue. IN COMMITTEE. The Council then went into committee on the dispute : between the. Lower Gorge Ferryman and the^** Engineer. A report was read by Mr Rockstrow, from the committee ap- .a pointed to enquire into the charges made by Mr Nutt. The report recommended that the ferryman's services should be dispensed with as soon as possible, and also stated that under the present management there was not proper supervision of the ferry system. The evidence taken by the committee was also read. — Mr Perkins attended on behalf of the ferryman Harmes, and addressed the Council at length in support of his client. He. also produced two letters and a petition in favor of Harmes. In concluding his address, Mr Per.« kins expressed a hope that the Council would exercise their clemency, and give the man another chance. — Messrs Linton arid Rockptrbw, two" ; members of the committee, spoke in support of the report, and rebutted , the remarks made by Mr Perkins— The Chairman said it appeared to him that the committee had givei every attention to the matter, arid, considered that the man had every chance offered him to rebut, the evidence.—Proposed by Mr Kebbell, seconded by Mr MJ'Beth and carried f — « « That the report of the committee • be adopted." . .V Mrs Doughty's Letter.— The chairman said it was a hard case, no 'doubt ; but it was entirely Doughty's own fault. If the claim was allowed, it would form a very bad precedent. Tne Councillors present agreed with this view, and resolved that it was out of their power to comply with Mrs Doughty's request. '. BESOLUTIbtfS . JPASBED. s ' Proposed by Mr Rockstrow, seconded by Mr Linton, and carried — "That tenders be called for fencing . the road on both sides through Mr Johnston's land. Tenders to close on 20th July, to le opened by Councillors M,'Lennau, Rockatrpw, and the County Engineer." It was resolved to call for tenders for the lease of the Lower Gorge Ferry. Proposed by Mr Kebbell, seconded by Mr Rookstrow, and carried-" That the Chairman write to the Minister of Public Works for leave ( to, survey i for the inland roafl'on the^ands, .of Hemina Tewe and others called 'the , Makahuri ßlock." ....,- ,- -;;p; ; NEXT MEETING. The next meeting of the council was fixed for the 2nd, day of August.
