County Council — The ordinary monthly meeting of the County Council takes plaoe at Foxton on Monday next. Court. — There will be a Justices' Court at Otaki tj-morrow, Saturday. Potatoes. —In another column Messrs Armitage Eros announce that they ore now offering potatoes for sale at £3 5s per ton. No Confidence. — The nocoufidenco debate still drags along in the Lower House. The division will probably take place to-nig-'it, but is certain to result in a large majority for the Government. Customs Duties.— ln another column wa publish a detailed list of thr Customs duties roeeived at the Port of Foxton during the past month and. quarter. Although the amount is still ten times smaller thnn it ought to be, considering the trade of the place, we are glad to learn the present returns show ft gaeat improvement, the revenue received during the June quarter being double the amount received during any previous quaiter since the place was declared a Customs port. Those Letters.— Several members of the Education Board expressed surprise the other day at Mr Hulke's letter to Mr Snnaon, containing the charges against the Inspector, gettting into the newspapers. The answer is simple enough. A copy of the letter was forwarded to tho Foxton School Committee, and that body permitted a representative of this journal to take a copy of it for publication. The letter was in due course published by us, and oopied into several of our contemporaries. R.M. Court. — The R.M. Court was yesterday occupied for several hours in considering a charge of indecent assault preferred by a woman named Grindstone against John Groome. A full report of fhe investigation will bo found in another column. Entertainment. — A meeting of the Fnte'-ta nment Committee of the Manawatn Bowing Club wa< held on Tuesday evening last, when it was decided to hold the next entertainment at the Foxton Public Hall on Wednesday, July 14. Tne first part of the entertainment will consist of eight musical selections (am -ti mental), by ladies only. The interval will then take place, and the second par- will be entirely occupied by the " Foxt.n Christy Minstrels," who will confine themselves simply to the •' chair business." The Chiistys are in active rehearsal, and we can safely predict that the whole entertainment will be fiist class. Campbelltown.— We are glad to be ablu to record that Caniphelltnwn has been granted the privilege of a Post office, Mr Fraser having been appointed Postmaster. Thi" will be a great b«on to the settlers on ibe Douglas Block. The Sokoolmisteb Abkoau. — Wo do not as a rule publish letter* addressed to the Editor, unless tho namo of the writer is sent as it guarantee of good faith, but subjoined we famish our raiders with a speoimen of numerous communications that fiiiri thoir way into the editorial wastepaper. basket. Who the writer w, of course we do not know, but as he seems desperately anxious to nee his haudywork in print, we publish the effusion exactly as written. If the writer will accept a suggestion kindly meant, ho will at once join a night school, and spend his evenings in trying to improve his mind, instead of being so desirous of obtaining an invitation to a ball. Here is the letter:— "To The Kditorof. M. Herald. . — I have heared a great many remarks from different parties who are longing to hear of an t-ntertainment of Some little Sort or other, and in finishing up Came t > the conclusion that Foxton alwise being a very -andy & Dry sort of A place tba f . the people were Dry in it, and what Gold was in it was either too heavy to throw about, or has Dryed with the place & blown away, with the rest of the Dust the winter is now half over & We have never even hpard or Seen an envertaton to even five minuets of entertainment Shurely they ou/ht to Scrap up enough to call a Few Couple together for 10 minuets danceing if nothing else are they not an agreeabale lot of people in Foxton or is it that they Want touching Up. hopeing you might touch their Memories now and again I am <tC Spobtsma.v, Manawatu" County, Keep our names up.
