MANAW VTU HIGHWAYS BOARD. ThursDAY, June 10.

engineer' 9 nspon*. t have riot much to report about this month, as there are very few works being carried on in the Highways District at the present time. The late rains have done certain damages, whi,ch are hereunder mentioned in their respective wards. no. 1 WarC. I The metailiugdn the Cdmetery Road is finished^ as alsd the short pieog at Biirt's | Bridge. I have again called tenders for formation of iho street* through Sanson. T^han, the successful teuderer for Wilson's Road metalling, has refused to carry on the work. I thorefore oalled fresh tenders for same. The late heavy rain has carried away another of the old white pine bridges on the Feilding-Halcombe Boad. After nonsuiting with Mr Farmer t dalled tenders for a new bridge, which in urgently required. together with Mr Fanner, I interviewed Mr Wilson re new road lino, being continuation of present road line, known as Wilsou's Line, towards Kakariki. The proposed new lino will be shorter and a flinch better grade than the old lino. The following are the arrangements uuder which Mr Wilson will allow the road to bo direr ted through his property : — Mr Wilflou will undertake to exchange road for road so far as the road line is con cerned, from ihu junction neer the Rangitikei River, and where the old and propoae-l road lino joins on the flat on the Kakariki side of th' gully ; Mr Wilson takingr the road above mentioned and giving a new road through his property ; aud this Board to undertake to fence the said new road line on one side. Supposing the Board had not power to exchange road for road, the Board to pay Mr Wilson £6 per ace foi- the land, and allow £*)0 to Mr Wilson for. fencing said road line, aud the said fencing to be erected within three years from date of signing agreement. Mr Wilson will give a letter undertaking to allow a road through his property subject to the above conditions, said road to be set out by the Board's Engineer. SO 2 WAtID. The contractor for Hickford'a Line for mation is progressing with his work. Upon ray visiting the road lino I found it necessary that two ditchos should be cut, instead of one as specified I therefore instructed contractor to oarry out the ditches and for mafcion same as the other portion of the road. I have called tenders for additional works on the road line near Campbelltown, being bridge, culverts, and formation at oacb of the creeks. At the last meeting 1 of the M»nawatu County Council, the former vote of £300 for Hickford's Line of road, Carnarvon, was rescinded, and the following resolution was carried — " That after the prasent contracts were provided for, the balance from the £300 to be expended on the formation of road line between Jones' line and Taipo Road, formation to start at Jones' line end. I await your instructions to set out the above work. no. 3 waed. Mr Bowe has been working at the ditch clearing in front of his house. Mr Webb has started his work widening the main drain at Foxton. I have had to arrange with the Local Board contractor at Foxton t* sorub-^and sand a fow chains of what will eventually be the Foxton-Otaki Road. This road was badly cut up by the drays rawtalling the road from C. Symsas' towards town The contractor on tho Motoa Rovl is pushing on with his work and making n S'"<<3 j->b of «itme. I hnve staked out and levelled come fifty chains more of this road, but have not been able to prepare plans for same at present. I would suggest time Mr M'Pherson and myself be empowred to receive and open tenders in, say, t>-n days from now, for the above fifty chains, so as to push the work on. This ia part of the County Council vote. Thure are several main drains at Motoa that require cleaning out and deepening very badly, to get the water away fiora road line more quickly. It will not be a very costly job— say about £30 would go a long way towards these works, and possibly the settlers may be induced to contribute a part of the money, as by relieving the road line it will also relieve their property of water, in fact be a great benefit to the ratepayers generally about these parts.
