EDUCATION BOARD, WANGANUI.
♦ ! The Board met at Wanganui on Wednesday ?ast,when Messrs Watt (Chairman), Sanson, \t'Gregor, Baker, Notman, Coutts, and tho Rev. Mr Ross were present. We collate the following items from the Wanganui Chronicle : — Waitohi School.— Miss Phillips' resig. nation was accepted, her name to be kept on the books for future appointment, and that the school be closed in consequence of the unsatisfactory attendance. Examinations.— Moved by Mr Coutts, seconded by Mr Rosa, and carried— Th .t all who have held, or still hold, scholarships I under the Board, bo requested to attend the examinations of the Wauganui District High school pupils. Makiso Road. — Letter from Committ asking that a tank and lavatory be provided, and that additions be made to school building. The Secretary was instructed to reply that the Board would give the request ita favourable consideration when in funds. Also, from the Chairman of the Committee, stating that out of a cheque for £33 sent him by the Board's Seoretary, for payment of tho contractors for the school building, he had paid £13 4s 9J in liquidation of another claim, and that the parties in whose favour the contractors had given an order for the full amount, declined to accept anything less on account. The Board decided that the Chairman must be held responsible for the application of the money to the purpose for which it was sent, and that no further payments be made to the Makinovoad Committee until snch before mentioned claim is satisfied. Otaki. — Letter read from the Committee, statins; that certain conveniences could not .bo erected for the amount specified by the Board ; also, requesting that a shed and certain fencing be done. Resolved; That the Otaki School Committee be requested to call for tenders for the erection of the closets and shed, the fence to stand over for thejpresent. — Letter from Mr Hoss, the teacher, in the absence of the Chairman of the Committee, enclosing a long list of requisites, considered absolutely necessary before the school could be opened. Resolved, That the Committee be authorised to procure a table and two ohairs, blinds, door steps, well and pump, &c. Also that £10 be paid to the teacher. | Karerb.— Letter from the Comniittee enclosing tender for converting old school - house into teacher's residence. Tender accepted, j Paxmerston. — Letter from Committee, suggesting that the Crown Lands Department be applied to for certain sections at Terrace End, Palmerston, for school purposes. Agreed to. School Desks. — A number of tenders were received for the supply of school desks. They were referred to the Committee for acceptance. ' Examination Papebs. — Mr Nolman moved the motion of which he had given notice at the previous meeting, That a supplement to the Inspector's report, containing copies of the examination questions set for pupils examined in the several standards, by means of written papers, be immediately published and distributed to the teachers. After a lengthy discussion, in which all the members took part, the mover withdrew his motion, on the assurance that copies of the examination papers would be included in the next report of the Inspector. In Committee.— On the motion of Mr Sanson, the Board wont into Committee to consider a letter he had received from one of the teachers. After the Board had resumed, the Chairman reported that the Committee had passed the following resolution, which the Board confirmed :— That Mr Hulke ;bo direoted to appear before the Board at its next meeting, in order that he may substantiate his charges against the Inspector, as set forth in his letter to Mr Sanson of the 23rd instant, and that a copy of Mr Eulke'g letter be sent to the Foxton Committee, together with a copy of this resolution.
