fatal accident.

We regret to record a fatal accident on the railway line, by which a man named Greaves lout his life. The deceased, we are informed, owns property at both Tnranaki and Nelson, and a few day a ago arrived in Foxton, on the look ont for land. He was advised by Messrs Thynne, Liuton and Co. to proceed to Marton, and inspect some property near that township. This he determined to do, and on Wednesday last, Mr Rotheram happening to be in Foxton, Mr Greaves asked that gentleman to pass him along the lino in a " special " that wan going as far as Kuere. To this Mr Rotheram objected at first, on the ground that t here were no carriages on the other side of the break. As, however, two other per* sons — a young lady and Mr Fergusson, of Palmerston -preforwd similar request*, Mr Rotheram consented to take them, nt the same time informing them of the dirtcomforts to whi-ih they would be put. Whilst the party were being ferried over the flooded part of the line, Mr Rotheram especially cautioned the three persona to sit on the bottom "f the ballast- wagon which would convoy them to Palmorston, and by no means to either stnnd or sit on the edge. Deceased negleoted to follow the warning, and sat on the back end of the wagon. The result was that when the train started the jolt threw him out on to the line. Two wagon wheels passed over his right arm, wbiou was extended across the Una of rails, aud on being picked np it was found three wounds were inflioted on his forehead, and one on the back of bin head. The train was stopped directly the accident ocourred, and the unfortunnto man laid in the bottom of the truok. It was thought his injuries were not likely to prove fatal, as upon being laid in tho truok he said, " I am all right ; don't move me." At Paltuerston ho was taken to the Clarendon Hotel, where he was attended by two medical gentlemen, who set the broken arm, but the unfortunate man sank rapidly, and expired at 11 pm. An inquest was held at the Hotel where deceased expired at 3 p.m., but the result has not reached us yet.
