MR LINTON IN EXPLANATION.

TO THE KlinOK OV TUB MAN'AWAIT HKIIAT.n. Sin, — I lmve just seen a copy of your issue of ycsterdaj', in which you discuss certain explanations made by mo " as Valuator to the Manawatu Koad Board" in reference to the increase of rates in No. G Ward, as shown in the present roll, from, as you intimate, information received from Mr M'Pherson, member for No. 3 Ward. You make it appear thus — Thac Mr Dalrymple remarked to me as valuer, •' I see my rates are higher this year," to which I replied — " It is not that your rates are higher, but that some of your sections were left out last year. «' I beg most distinctly to say that, such an expression was never made use of at the meeting referred to. What wax said was this : — Air Dairy mple remarked, that there was a very large increase in the rates iv his Ward, and asked me to explain how it arose. I did explain thus: — That the property generally was not rated any higher this year, but that a large area in tho Ward in question h*id been omitted by the valuers last year. If anyone with common patience had taken the trouble to think for one moment, they would have, soon at a "lance that it was quite impossible for any so called omissions in Mr Dalrymple's property, to have represented the difference between the two rolls (some £I<3<).) That there were no such omissions in Mr Dalrymple's property may bo proved by comparing the roll of last year with that just compiled. I must confess that your version of (his affair will lend residents in the .Manawatu County to the conclusion that there is neither love nor good will existing between the Editor of the Manawatu Herald and tho Chairman of the Manawatu Road Board. I am &c, James Linton. Wellington, March 17, 1880.
