THE ADMINISTRATION OF PUBMC AFFAIRS. Our Wellington correspondent writes as follows, regarding the absence of the Hon. Mr Oliver from Wellington. He says :— » The Hon. Mr Oliver's continued absence from Wellington is causing great inconvenience. It will be remembered that on the very day on which the last session of Parliament closed, the lion, gentleman betook himself to his home to seek a little well-earned rest, and to spend Christmas with his family. Even then his trip, which was to haA r e been for a few day? only, extended into several weeks, and when lie did return, and the hearts of all in the North island who were looking forward to a little attention being bestowed on their long-ne-glected districts were cheered by the announcement, it was only that they might be speedily disappointed again by his second departure for the South, after only staying about four or five days in Wellington. Mr Oliver is in the South still, and seems likely to remain there for some time to come, as it is currently reported that he intends visiting the whole of the West Coast and Nelson districts on his way up, which must necessarily take considerable time. The practical inconvenience of his long-continued absence from Wellington lies in the fact that the very liberal votes passed by the Assembly last session for general purposes cannot be apportioned until he not only returns, but has time enough to consider the conflicting claims of the different districts ; and as the financial year now closes in March, when all votes remaining unexpended will lapse, the necessity for his speedy return is doubly apparent."
