FOXTOtf SUBSCRIPTION LBT."^^ Although Foxton is not a flourishing place at present, wo are glad to see that an effort is being made to 6end assistance to our distressed and famine-stricken fellow subjects in Ireland. Our Palmerstnn friends hare given a concert, which has resulted in a splendid return, and thouch the Foitonians have been deprived of the honor of taking tlifi initiative, they have nevertheless made a really good rftart. Below, we publish a li*t of sub9ei£ptf«(«l#((§dy received, and will in e.aob^Aucc&riveJsjgue acknowledge fresh amounts. The Foxtoa list had its origin in the action nf the Rev Fr. Morcau, Catholic priest of the district. That rev. gentleman brought the mattor before liia congregation, nnd a list was handed to Mr Bowe, who was appointed collector. After seveial potiids had been subscribed (almost exclusively by Roman Catholics), Mr Bowe passed the list Oo to Mr Andrew Whyte, and requested that gentleman to take the matter in hand. It was pointed out, however, that the heading of the list showod it woa addressed exclusively to Roman Catholics, and signed by the district clergyman, nnd that if a general movement wore made, it would be more desirable to adopt a wider basis, and represent the dona* tiona as the gift of the community as a whole, and not of a seel ion of it. These views were accepted by Mr Whyte, and he accordingly stirted a Foxton list with a handsome donation of five guineas. We have made this explanation, to that our readers may understand that i,i addition to the sum jriveu below about £10 have been subscribed by our Romnn Catholic fellow settlers. Jt will therefore be seen a good stai t has b.:en made. A monster entertain* incut is nlao projected, Mr Whyte having promised the Public Hall free. We hope to see at least £50 raised in Foxton. We have great pleasure in acknowledging the following sums :—
