It is believed that there is a prospect of au open winter in the Arctic Sea thi3 year. Hia Wooden Leg to The Foiie. — When the riot cases wore about to be tried at Christehurcb, a most brutal assault was committed on one of the witnesses, named J. Johnston. As ho "was proceeding to the Supreme Court, he was accosted in the vacant space adjacent to Mr Joynt'a new offices by a stranger, who wanted to know if he was one of the witnesses. On his replying in the affirmatire, the stranger said he should never got to the Court, and assaulted him. Mr Johnston who, unfortunately has only one leg, having lost one through an accident, finding himself in n bnd case, drew his wooden leg and smote his adversary in what is popularly known as the "bread- basket." A friendly Samaritun, who was passing by, remarked upon the cowardice of striking aciipple,-and forth with "went for" the aggressor, who was handled rather roughly. Mr Johnston, who had to keep his appointment at the Supreme moreover, not in a position then proceeded on his way. Mr we believe, can identify the man attacked him. It is to be hoped he caught. — Press. P^TCattle Disease. — A singular disease .Tmong oaltle on the plains is attracting attention. The animals drop dead without any warning. A post-mortem examination shows a clot of congested blood on the brain, all other organs being healthy. Mr Power, inspector of sheep, says it is a sort of apoplexy, and recommends frequent change of pasture. Others think it is due to old pasture containing a large proportion of ammonia from continual stocking, recent rains having made the ammonia mo:o active. Whatever the cnuse, over fifty head, including seventeen owned by the mission, have died. — Napier Herald. A Tiny Toy. — The smallest engine in the world is said to be in the possession of Mr John Perm, of Greenwich. It stunds on a threepenny piece, although it really covers leas, for its base only measures three-eights of an inch by three-tenths. So small are some parts that they require a powerful magnifying glass to see their form. The whole weight of the model is less than a threepenny piece. It works admirably, aud when working its crank shaft performs from 20,000 to 80,000 revolutions per minute. Ale My Eye.— A learned German doctor has (says a Paris paper) discovered a means of dyeing the eyes of animals in general, and of man in particular, any color he pleases. He is accompanied on his travel *-ffor speculation by a dog with a rose colored eye, a cat with an orange-red eye, and a monkey with a chrome-yellow eye. But the most curious specimens) T>f . lii 3 art are a negro with one eye b*ask and the other blue, and a negresi with one gold- colored, and the other silyer-white. The doctor says the process flif ocular transformation, fur from injuring* the Bight, strengthens and improves it.
