FOXTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The committee net on Friday last. AH the members were present. The following letters from Mr Hulke were read :— Foxton, Nov 26, 1879. The Chairman, School Committee. Sir — The Church of England School Feast will be hold on Monday next I have therefore to ask for a holiday for that day— C. dulke. Foxton, December 8, 1879. Denr Sir—l regret that the occ&sion of my asking for a holiday, the granting of which necessitated the closing of the school, has given offence to a Bection of the community As you granted the holiday at my request, the charge of sectarianism is fastened upon me, and I must request you, in the interests of the school, to give it a most unqualified denial — 0 Hulke The Chairman produced a copy of the Manawatu Herald, containing the " local" which called forth the letter, sni was about to read it, but several members objected that no complaint .baa been made, and the paragraph waa not read Mr Stewart proposed the following motion—"ThatMr Hulke be informed that the committee have had no complaints brought before them in connection with the school holiday on occasion of the Church of England buudur school fete, and the Chairman states that the holiday was granted when Mr Hulke applied for it." Mr Kockstrow then n>oved the following resolution :— " That this meeting approve* of the Chairman's action in granting a holiday on tho . first December. " He then handed it to the Chairman, who passed it on to Mr Whyte to bo seconded, but that
gentleman refused to do so, as ho obji oted to tho action taken. The paper was then passed on to .Mr Jjiddell, but that gentleman also refusnd to second it, unless an addition waß made that the school was not to be dosed without the Committee being consulted. Au addition to that effect was made, and the ro?olution, moved by Mr Rockstrow and seconded by Mr Liddell, was carried, as follows :-— '• That this meeting approves of the Chairman's aotion in granting a holi - flay on the Ist December, but in future the Chairman should call a meeting of the committee before granting holidays." Three smill accounts, amounting to £9 3s, were passed, and the Committeo adjourned.
